Las Posadas

Las Posadas, which translates to “the inns,” is another beloved tradition that holds a special place at the missions and reenacts the journey of Mary and Joseph as they searched for lodging in Bethlehem before the birth of Jesus. This celebration once occurred over 9 days in December culminating on Christmas Eve. Today, the Mission churches and Cathedral generally choose an evening in December before Christmas for the celebration.

The group moves from house to house or along a designated route, singing traditional songs and asking for “posada” or shelter. At each stop, they are symbolically turned away until they reach the final location, where they are welcomed inside. This reenactment not only commemorates the biblical story but also serves as a reminder of the importance of hospitality and compassion. In San Antonio, Las Posadas is more than just a religious observance; it is a vibrant community event.

San Fernando Cathedral, Mission Concepción, Mission San José, Mission San Juan Capistrano, and Mission San Francisco de La Espada all have Posadas.

• Sunday December 15th: La Gran Posada at San Fernando Cathedral. Procession begins at 6:00pm in Milam Park and ends at 8:00pm with Christmas Music at San Fernando Cathedral.
• Friday December 20th: Posada at Mission Concepción at 6:00pm.
• Friday December 20th: Posada at Mission San Juan Capistrano at 6:00pm.
• Friday December 20th: Posada at Mission San José at 6:00pm
